How a Keto Diet Can Cause a Fatty Liver

I always recommend adding a bunch of vetables to the ketogenic diet. You want 7-10 cups of vegetables to keeo the liver flushed out. Unlimited vetables, and don’t add into your calculations [macros]Dr. Berg

Can The Keto Diet Cause A Fatty Liver?

A fatty liver is most often related to drinking excess alcohol or digesting carbs and sugar which we see in the standard American diet.

You’ll notice in the video by Dr. Darren Schmidt debates other experts on this topic.  He claims the keto diet is a “cure” for a fatty liver.

You can go into ketosis and clean up all the fat. When you go into ketosis, and your body is burning all the fat, it’s pulling fat from the liver too.

How to Prevent or Cure a Fatty Liver

Dr. Berry, in his video says 30-40% of American adults currently have a self-inflicted fatty liver.  1 out of 10 kids, he says, has fatty liver disease.

He continues to say that a Type 2 diabetic has a 40-80% of having fatty liver disease.

In Thomas DeLauer’s video, he explains, quite scientifically that you get a fatty liver from carb consumption, not from fat consumption.

Eat higher sulfur foods. Things like eggs, broccoli, garlic and cabbage

Thomas DeLauer

Essentially, a lack of insulin can increase the number of stored triglycerides in the liver leading to a very fatty liver.

A fatty liver can be repaired often with changing or improving the diet alone. You’ll notice that the items suggested to reduce a fatty liver are actually very much part of the ketogenic lifestyle.

  • Stop eating sugar
  • Stop drinking excess alcohol
  • Avoid eating excess fruit
  • Stop eating fructose
  • Stop eating starches (simple carbs)
  • Stop eating vegetable oil, canola oil, safflower oil, soybean oil
  • Take a Vitamin D Supplement
  • Eat high sulfur foods: Eggs, Broccoli, Garlic, Cabbage
  • Omega 3 Vitamin Acids (Get in whole foods Grass-fed meat, pastured Eggs, butter from grass-fed cows)
  • Take Turmeric (Curcumin)

How Long Does It Take to Reverse A Fatty Liver

It’s not the fat in the food that causes a fatty liver. It’s the carbs, sugar and starches

Dr. Eric Westman

It’s worth noting that Dr. Westman confirms that there is evidence to show that extended fasting, not intermittent fasting, can cause fatty liver.

Dr. Westman says a fatty liver can sometimes be improved in as little as 6 months or less.

How Do You Know If You Have A Fatty Liver?

See your physician and request a test for fatty liver. See the doctor again 6-8 months after changing your diet

Take Aways

Keto Diet liver damage is not a concern for most of the experts.

Most doctors are not advising any kind of product that provides a liver cleanse. In fact, Dr Berry says they don’t work.

Most doctors that are knowledgeable about the Ketogenic diet report that the keto way of eating is actually a way to repair a fatty liver rather than cause one.

Most studies see very little change in liver enzymes from someone on the Ketogenic Diet.

If you are concerned about your diet causing a fatty liver, see your doctor for a test. If your liver is fine today, and you start the keto diet, test again in 6-8 months and note any change.

If you currently have a fatty liver, beginning the ketogenic way of eating could repair it. Have a test in 6-8 months to see if this proved true for you.

Your health should be guided by your own hands and research and hopefully the insight from these experts will allow you to make your own decisions.
